We are constantly told people who give are good people.
With all the benefits of giving, can there be any disadvantages in giving?
The answer is yes.
Excepting people who have a severe disability/ illness or people who face a threat to their life/ civil liberties, giving can actually have unintended consequences.
1. Giving can re-instate the cycle of dependency in the receiver.
2. Giving can re-enforce a paradigm of lack & scarcity in the receiver.
3. Giving can rob people of their dignity.
Also, ever noticed how some people immerse themselves sacrificially in giving missions to avoid facing their own problems? This is a form of self-deception.
The best way to improve the world is by improving yourself. After all, you can't pour from an empty cup.
Once you have developed yourself, then help others. But don't help them merely by giving.
The best way to help others is through empowering.
Poverty & dependency cycles can never be broken by giving alone.
